Cairns is one of the best towns to base yourself when wishing to visit the reef, as it is very accessible from there. You can essentially depart on a tour from Cairns any day of the week and head out to explore the vibrance of the reef. Kuranda Scenic Railway
The Kuranda Scenic Railway is a historic railway that has operated for over 130 years. Jump aboard the train, as it takes you deep into the forest, through the rugged mountains, and cascading waterfalls. During the trip you will be given some fascinating information about the railway and the history of this region of Australia. The scenery is absolutely spectacular, and this is definitely a must see when you are visiting Cairns!
Green Island
Green island is a beautiful tropical paradise that is located in the heart of the Great Barrier Reef, only 45 minutes ferry ride from Cairns. This lush green island is the only cay in the Great Barrier Reef that has a rainforest, hence the name. Spend the day on Green Island relaxing on the white sand and swimming in the crystal-clear turquoise water, while also keeping an eye out for some of the unbelievable marine life that is of abundance in the waters.
